Tsuruga Wakasonojo XI
Tsuruga Wakasonojo XI has been designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese Government and holds the premier professional name of the shinnai world.
Shinnai is a style of musical storytelling that was created in Japan by Tsuruga Wakasanojo I (1716-1786). It is classic and intense, emphasising human feeling and passion as opposed to narration and description. Shinnai is accompanied by the shamisen and can convey excitement or subtlety, elegance or drama, strength, urgency, happiness, sadness and passion.
In conjunction with the University of Edinburgh, Tsuruga Wakasonojo XI will conduct an afternoon workshop from 2.30pm at St Cecilia’s Hall, Cowgate, Edinburgh, on Wednesday 21st October.
