Japan Children's Day - 10th May 2014

On Saturday 10th May, the Consulate General of Japan, in co-operation with Asian Studies at the University of Edinburgh, celebrated Japan's national holiday 'Children's Day' in the centre of Edinburgh with a fun filled day packed with Japanese cultural performances, activities and workshops for all the family.

At the event we displayed an exhibition of the winning paintings from our Picture Japan Painting Competition for Primary School Children, which were chosen through a rigorous selection process from over 400 wonderful entries. We were delighted by the excellent turnout for the Prize-giving ceremony in the afternoon, during which the Consul General presented the talented prize-winners with certificates and prizes.

Event attendance exceeded expectations; families streamed into St John's Church Hall all day, perhaps attracted by the sight of koi nobori carp streamers fluttering in the wind, the sound of taiko drums and the shamisen, or intrigued by the outside tea ceremony demonstration, and 'mochitsuki' rice cake making workshop.

Thanks to the support, hard work and talents of our large team of volunteers, attendees were able to enjoy a huge variety of performances and activities, and the event was a great success.
