■ Scotland Meets Sake – Report NEW
On Monday November 23rd, close to 70 attendees gathered at the University of Edinburgh for “Scotland Meets Sake”, a sake lecture and tasting. The event was organised by the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh, Sake Samurai UK, and the University of Edinburgh. As well as learning about the sake brewing process and the UK sake market, attendees listened avidly as common misconceptions surrounding sake (for example, that sake is a strong spirit, should be drunk hot, only goes well with sushi, and all tastes the same) were unravelled - sake actually has a low alcohol content and can be enjoyed like wine, and in truth compliments a variety of western dishes. The tasting that followed provided attendees with the opportunity to sample and compare a variety of sakes, and highlighted the distinctive flavours of each brew.
