■ Rugby match (Teikyo University versus Durham University)to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Teikyo University of Japan in Durham
To commemorate the 25th year since the establishment of the Teikyo University of Japan in Durham, September saw Teikyo University Rugby Club, winners of 6 successive national university rugby championships in Japan, embarking on their first UK tour. During the tour, they played Durham University Rugby Football Club, a team famous for their successes at many British University and College competitions.
The match took place on the 14th of September in Durham city, and supporters included Lord Lieutenant of County Durham Sue Snowdon, Chair of Durham County Council and Mayor of the City of Durham Jan Blakey, Durham university staff, the Principal of Teikyo University of Japan in Durham, international students from the Teikyo University of Japan in Durham, students of Durham University, and Deputy Consul –General Ishigami.
After the match, a gala dinner was held at Durham University, and was attended by the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, the Mayor of the City of Durham, Durham University Warden and Vice Chancellor Professor Stuart Corbridge, and a large number of relevant parties. The dinner provided a great opportunity to deepen the relationship between the two universities in the UK and in Japan.
