マティソン大臣との三菱電機工場訪問時の髙岡総領事挨拶

令和3年8月5日
Cabinet Secretary Mr. Michael Matheson, Mitsubishi Electric Europe President Mr. Tatsuya Ishikawa, Mr. Masao Nagano, Mr. Rodney Ayre, Mr. William Stwart, Mr. Iain Mawar, ladies and gentlemen,
My name is Nozomu Takaoka, Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh since 2018.

First of all I would like to thank Cabinet Secretary for his presence. This is a great opportunity for me to impress upon Cabinet Secretary the great contribution that the Japanese companies are making for the Scottish economy, employing over 9,000 Scottish workers in total. Among more than 60 Japanese companies operating in Scotland, Mitsubishi Electric, as I hope you will witness today, is certainly a great company with three noteworthy characters in my opinion.

In the first place, I know that this company understands the importance of placing priority to its relations with the community. The prime example is the annual “pump it up” contest, which was obviously canceled this year because of Covid. But on the previous occasions, I attended this great educational event in which more than one thousand local pupils and students participated to produce the best proposal to utilize Mitsubishi heat pumps technology for the benefit of local economy and green environment.

When the contest resumes possibly next year, I hope the Cabinet Secretary or other representatives of the government will attend as Cabinet Secretary Fiona Hyslop and Councilor Kerr kindly did in the past.

Secondly, this company understands the importance of international cooperation and even after Brexit, continues to employ sizable portion of non-British engineers and officers from the continent. This shows Mitsubishi is a good Scottish, British and European company as well as Japanese.

Thirdly, this company is contributing to the protection of environment. I have heard that the demand for heat pump air conditioners produced in this factory is increasing during the pandemic, both here in the UK and on the continent because its high energy efficiency is widely appreciated. This is certainly good news, leading to the reduction of carbon emission across Europe per economic output.

In concluding, I would like to thank Cabinet Secretary once again for his visit and express my hope that his visit will lead to the further awareness of the good thing the Japanese companies are doing by the Scottish people and furtherance of Japan-Scotland cooperation both in business and in tackling climate change.

Thank you very much for your attention.
