■ Evening Concert “An Evening of Music and Song”–Report
On Friday 29 July, the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh held an evening concert “An Evening of Music and Song” at St Mary’s Cathedral. The performing artists were Mr Kimihiro Yasaka, a solo pianist, and the Nightingale international singing group. One of the songs from Nightingale was “Mugi no Uta”, the theme song of the NHK TV series entitled “Massan” inspired by the lives of Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japan’s whisky industry, and his Scottish wife, Rita, which made Scotland even more well-known in Japan. The people were enchanted by their beautiful voices echoing in the entire church. From Mr Yasaka, the repertoires related to rain (indeed appropriate for the wet Scottish weather as he described) were presented, and everybody was captivated by the soft and deep sounds. We had a large audience, who gave vigorous applause and enjoyed what proved to be a thoroughly pleasant evening.
