Inaugural Greeting by (May 2016) Dear Friends in Scotland and Northern England, My name is Daisuke Matsunaga, and I am the new Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh. Having arrived here as recently as 10 May, everything I see is new and fascinating. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to serve in this charming city, which is endowed with beautiful landscapes and has a rich historical heritage. On the morning following my arrival, I took a walk in the garden of my residence and found some bluebells growing there. This delighted me, because I used to sing “The Bluebells of Scotland” in secondary school, but had never seen the real thing. After more than forty years, I was finally able to put a real flower to the name and was excited to discover that they were more beautiful than I had imagined. It is my firm intention to promote friendship and goodwill between Japan and Scotland, and introduce Japanese culture to people in Scotland and Northeast England. I also want to promote the business and economic relationship between Japan and the region. And I hope to make a lot of friends during my time here, because I am keen to ensure that we learn as much as we can from one another. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and I look forward to meeting you. With warm regards,
the Consul General in Edinburgh
