Decoration of the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays upon Mrs Sayoko Smith by the Government of Japan

On 3rd November, the Government of Japan announced that Mrs Sayoko Smith (Sayoko Miyake) of the North East Japanese Women’s Association is  awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays.

In 2007, Sayoko established the Women’s Association of Northeast England. As the founder and Chair, Sayoko has contributed not only to the improvement of the welfare of Japanese women, but also to the dissemination of Japan culture to the local society through the activities of the Women’s Association.

Prior to the establishment of the Women’s Association, Sayoko worked as a volunteer at the Red Cross. Sayoko has also been responsible for helping Japanese families to settle into the area, following their relocation with Japanese companies. Long before the establishment of the Women’s association, Sayoko has made great endeavours within her local community.

The Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh pays homage to Sayoko’s significant efforts over a long period of time and congratulates her on this commendation. The Consulate hopes for the further strengthening of the relations between Japan and UK based on the bond of goodwill established by Mrs Sayoko’s work.
