Address from Consul General Takaoka: Thistle and Sakura: A Glasgow – Japan networking event

2019/5/8
My name is Nozomu Takaoka, Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh. Since I assumed my present post six months ago, today is the second time for me to visit this esteemed University of Glasgow.

In February, I had the honour to meet your Principal, Sir Anton Muscatelli, and discussed the ways to promote the University’s relations with Japan together with Professor Konstantinos Kontis and Dr Saeko Yazaki. And I commend their kind and strong commitment to create Glasgow-Japan networking event, “Thistle and Sakura”.

Thank you very much Professor Kontis and Dr Yazaki. And thank you all of you for gathering.

Today, I am going to talk about the political and economic relations between Japan and Scotland.  2019 is an especially timely year to discuss these relations for two major reasons. As my presentations title would suggest these are:  Reiwa and Brexit.

Before elaborating on these two points, let me talk a little bit about my background.
