Commemoration or the Russian Cruiser Varyag, later Japanese Cruiser Soya (15th August)

On Thursday 15th of August Consul General Nozomu Takaoka took part in a wreath laying ceremony in Lendalfoot to commemorate the extraordinary destinies of the Russian cruiser Varyag, later renames as Japanese cruiser Soya along with the Provost of South Ayrshire Helen Moonie and Consul General of the Russian Federation Andrey Pritsipov.

The Varyag was sunk off the coast of Chemulpo Bay during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. The Japanese Imperial navy salvaged the vessel and restored it as the Japanese cruiser Soya. The cruiser was later be returned to Russia when the two countries were allies in World War I. Later, the vessel was sent to Glasgow for its repair when the Russian Revolution broke out.
