Address from Consul General Takaoka: Surrealism and Cubomania - Talk on Gherasim Luca by Dr Masao Suzuki (Alliance Française)

2020/3/11
Thank you for the kind introduction. My name is Nozomu Takaoka, Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh.

It is always a pleasure for me to visit the Alliance française de Glasgow and to engage in the intellectual dialog involving Japanese, Scottish and French exchanges. I would like to thank Ms. Nathalie Korkmaz and Dr. Romana Fotiade for their initiative in incorporating today’s seminars into the Japan-UK Season of Culture.

I was also glad to learn of Professor Masao Suzuki’s involvement today, which is a good sign of the growing partnership between the University of Glasgow and Waseda University in the Arts and Humanities.

Today, we are going to learn about Gherasim Luca and Surrealism. One could argue perhaps that we are currently experiencing several surrealistic phenomena in my specialty of international relations; ranging from international politics, to globalization. Therefore, I am hoping that somehow I will be able to benefit from today’s lectures by Professor Suzuki, Dr. Kerr and Professor Fijalkowski.

I hope I have done my job properly to warm up for Professor Suzuki, whom I could have met thirty something years ago when we were young students studying at the Komaba Campus of the Tokyo University.

Thank you very much.
