Japan Society of Scotland Webinar (25th May 2020)
2020/5/29
Although the lockdown measures due to Covid-19 continue, please let us introduce some of the excellent Japanese cultural activities that you can get involved in online.
On 25th May, the Japan Society of Scotland successfully hosted their first online webinar with over 30 participants. Mr. Eric Melvin, a member of the Society, gave an illustrated talk with the title “Images of Japan” based on his numerous visits to the country. He reflected on his experiences and impressions of Japan, while highlighting historical and contemporary aspects of Japan-Scotland relations.
In particular, he discussed the role of Thomas Blake Glover as a moderniser of Japan in relation to Nagasaki, the centre of foreign trade at the time. He also touched upon the Scottish interest in Japanese art, which had an impact on the Scottish Colourists and the architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, to whom a museum is dedicated in the picturesque city of Hida Takayama, where many of his works are on display.
Accompanied by a great variety of photos and background information, Mr. Eric Melvin presented a well-rounded portrayal of Japanese culture.
