On the 19th of June, Consul General Tadashi Fujiwara was in-attendance at the 2022 Order of the Scottish Samurai Awards, which were held near Dunfermline at Broomhall House, family seat of the Earl of Elgin.  The awards were established by Ronald Watt OBE in honour of Thomas Blake Glover, whose important role in the modernisation of Meiji Japan led to him being nicknamed “the Scottish Samurai”. In addition, the Earl of Elgin’s ancestor was the British representative at the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1858, symbolizing his ties to Japan.

As well as strengthening the close ties existing between Japan and Scotland, the annual ceremony also recognises the remarkable achievements and contributions of individuals in their fields. As part of this year’s ceremony, 2 Japanese recipients were chosen among the 43 individuals honoured.

During his address, Consul General Fujiwara expressed his congratulations to those who had received an award, as well as his hope that, in the spirit of Glover’s achievements, they would continue to strengthen Japan and Scotland’s relationship in their respective fields.

In addition, a demonstration of the traditional Japanese martial art of iaido was conducted by master Robert Boyd, who was also honoured with an award at this year’s ceremony.
