Experiencing Japanese tradition through food and the spirit of tea (6th, 7th October)

| On the 6th of October at Glasgow University and 7th of October at Edinburgh University, a special event on the experience of food and Japanese tea ceremony was held. Titled "Capturing the Spirit of Japan With Your Five Senses”, the lectures focused on Japan’s food culture and traditional tea ceremony. In the lecture, Prof. Akira Shinagawa, Director of the Food Consciousness Research Institute, began by speaking about the importance of eating food with an awareness of the senses, using five keywords: “Itadakimasu" "Mottainai" "Gochiosama”, “Okagesama” and “Arigatou”. He then gave a demonstration of this in-person, involving the audience with samples that they could try. Following the lecture, Tea Master Soju Nakazawa of the Omotesenke gave a demonstration on the art of the tea ceremony, showcasing how it is to be felt with all of the five senses. Both events were very well attended by a wide range of people, from the general public interested in Japanese culture to students, staff, and educators from the respective universities. |
