On Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of October, a musical performance of the play “A Thousand Cranes” was held as part of the Orkney Japan Festival.

The performance on the 8th began with opening remarks from Orkney Japan Association President Liam McArthur, a member of the Scottish Parliament, followed by Deputy Consul Ishii's words of thanks to all involved.

The performance was directed by Ms. Noriko Tosaka, a former Takarazuka Revue actress and current voice trainer, and showcased works created by calligrapher Yukiko Doi to accompany the story, as well as projected English translations. The play also featured local children and other volunteers involved in the performance.

The venue saw such a high number of attendees that more chairs had to be gathered to provide seating, demonstrating the significant popularity of Japanese culture among local residents.

Other events at the Orkney Japan Festival included an exhibition and workshop of Koshoji calligraphy by calligrapher Yukiko Doi. In addition, a local art museum, The Pier Arts Centre, is holding an exhibition until November that connects Japan and Orkney through geology and contemporary art in Akiyoshidai, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
