Attendance at Ikebana Demonstration by Debora Hathorn of the Sougetsu Edinburgh Study Group (17th November 2022)

On the 17th of November 2022, Deputy Consul Ishii attended a demonstration of ikebana by Deborah Hathorn of the Sougetsu Edinburgh Study Group. Beginning her study of ikebana in 1972, Ms Hathorn qualified as an instructor of the Sougetsu school of flower arrangement in 1975 and has since trained more than 150 students in the discipline. In recognition of her distinguished achievements in promoting the spread of Japanese culture in the United Kingdom through ikebana, Ms Hathorn was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays in 2017 by the Japanese government. On the day of the exhibition, Ms Hathorn prepared seven successive ikebana compositions, charming the large audience that had come to observe.
