Throughout Scotland and the north of England, the consulate has been operating a series of school visits to introduce pupils in primary schools to Japanese language, cuisine, traditional arts and culture. While these lessons had been conducted online during the Covid-19 pandemic, face-to-face visits were able to resume from April 2022 onwards with the lifting of restrictions.

Between April 2022 and March 2023, a total of 16 classes were visited in 9 schools, introducing over 450 pupils to the following topics:
・The geography of Japan.
・Japanese language, such as writing systems and vocabulary.
・Japanese culture, such as anime, traditional arts and the experience of school children.
・Japanese technology, including famous companies and technologies such as robotics and railways.
・Hands-on experiences of origami, traditional toys such as kendama and calligraphy.

The pupils were familiar with several of the topics covered, including anime, video games and Japanese food such as sushi and katsu curry. With strong interest in the lessons, many pupils enthusiastically asked questions following the presentations.

We would like to continue to create opportunities for schoolchildren to learn about Japanese culture in future, so if you represent a school within our jurisdiction and are interested in receiving a visit then please contact our address below:
