The Fringe Japan 2023 event (16th August)

On Wednesday, August 16th, the Consulate General of Japan in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh held the “Fringe Japan 2023” event on the university’s campus. The event consisted of three parts: an ikebana demonstration, a tea ceremony demonstration and a promotional event for Japanese artists participating in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
 
First, Edinburgh-based Sogetsu Ikebana master Deborah Hathorn, who received the Order of the Rising Sun in 2017, made three ikebana arrangements. Next, during the tea ceremony demonstration, Urasenke tea master So-O Mio Shudo allowed the audience to experience the ceremony and served both matcha tea and four types of tea ceremony confectionary.
 
Finally, the Fringe Artists promotional event and reception began with opening speeches by Consul General Tadashi Fujiwara, and Colin Smyth MSP and member of the Scottish Parliament Cross-party group on Japan, followed by a welcoming speech and toast by the Edinburgh Fringe Festival Deputy Chief Executive, Lindsey Jackson. Performances by the following Japanese artists then commenced, delighting the audience:

Art Group Seigai:Dance performance
Yuriko Kotani:Stand-up comedy
Mochinosha Puppet Company:Shadow puppetry
I/O Multimedia Performance Company:Calligraphy performance

Although the Fringe Festival will soon be drawing to a close for another year, many of the Japanese artists still have performances ongoing until the end of the month so please go and support them if you are interested!
