Attendance at OJA Taiko Workshops (22nd – 23rd March 2024)
2024/4/2

From March 22nd – 23rd, Deputy Consul General Minori Ishii attended Orkney Japan Association’s taiko workshops held at the Orkney Theatre in Kirkwall with Tsuchigumo Daiko and in collaboration with the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh. Tsuchigumo Daiko, a group based in Glasgow, was founded in 2016 and has previously performed in Orkney in 2019. Their two founding members, Martin Doyle and Shonagh Walker, have also given taiko workshops in Orkney in the past. The finale of the taiko event, a concert featuring the Kirkwall City Pipe band and violinist Mr. Jeff Moore which had already sold a high number of tickets, was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. However, Martin and Shonagh were able to arrive safely in Orkney making it possible for taiko workshops open to school pupils from around the Orkney Islands, as well as public workshops to go ahead. The workshops were very positively received and attracted a high number of attendees who were able to learn about basic skills and play Japanese traditional taiko drums. |
