2024/8/31

On August 24th & 25th (Saturday & Sunday), JET AA (JET Alumni Association) of the JET Programme held their Japanese Summer Festival in Shambellie House, Dumfries. On the Saturday, Deputy Consul General Ishii Minori, Dumfries Vice Lord-Lieutenant Gordon Dickie and Shambellie House Chair John G Stewart gave greetings at the opening ceremony. Cross Party Group on Japan Chairman Colin Smyth (MSP) was also in attendance. At the festival, a great number of events were held, such as Japanese dancing, koto and shamisen (stringed instruments) musical performances, sumo and kyūdō (archery) demonstrations, noh and kyōgen talk sessions, bonsai and kimono exhibitions, calligraphy and sashiko stitching workshops, a yukata dressing experience, and an origami corner. A local restaurant was also selling Japanese bento box meals. With the venue crowded with many local residents, Shambellie House organiser declared “This is a great opportunity to introduce Japanese culture to local areas like this, outside of big cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow”, to a favourable reception. JET is an acronym for The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme. The JET Programme was founded in 1987 and invites young people from abroad to travel to Japan to participate in foreign language education and international exchange at a local level to promote internationalisation.
