Visit to Durham University (21st March 2025)

On 21 March, Deputy Consul General Minori Ishii visited Durham University, a university which has a degree course on Japan Studies and inter-university cooperation agreements with 11 Japanese universities. Durham University has also been collaborating with Japan on a wide range of topics for many years through its membership of RENKEI, an international network of Japanese and British universities which aims to share knowledge and promote joint international research. At the beginning of the meeting, Deputy Consul General Ishii was briefed on the wide-ranging cooperation between Durham University and Japan from Professor Janet Stewart, Executive Dean (Arts and Humanities), Professor Chris Done from the Department of Physics, Director of the Japanese Studies Professor Don Starr, and Assistant Professor of Japanese Language Studies Kaoru Umezawa (Modern Languages and Culture). Afterwards, Deputy Consul General Ishii also exchanged views on ways to further deepen these cooperative relationships with Executive Dean Janet Stewart.
Next, Deputy Consul-General Ishii visited the University's Oriental Museum, where she was guided by Head of Museums Dr Craig Barclay and others, and toured the museum, focusing on Japan-related exhibits, along with newly appointed Principal of Teikyo University's Durham Campus, Mr. Yukinori Okabe.
