Kimono photo exhibition workshop and talk event held in Orkney (29th March 2025)
2025/4/8

On Saturday 29th March, a kimono photo exhibition, workshop and talk hosted by Orkney Japan Association in conjunction with the Consulate General of Japan were held in Kirkwall Library.
The kimono photo exhibition took place on the ground floor and featured over 30 panels, drawing the attention of many visitors.
At the workshop, local residents were able to try “boro” sewing (Japanese textiles that are mended or patched together), as well as learning about the kimono making process from the event held in November, and the spirit of “mottanai”, continuing to use things for a long time.
The talk event centred around the recently discovered kimono of an Orkney woman who went to Japan to get married, and deepening knowledge about Japan’s wedding and kimono culture.
These kimono related events were a fantastic opportunity to learn about the sustainability of Japan’s traditional textiles and kimonos, and to deepen the valuable connection between Orkney and Japan.
