On 30 May, Cultural Consul Masataka Abe attended the Henry Dyer Symposium 2025 held at the University of Glasgow.

The symposium was held at the University of Glasgow in addition to being held at the University of Tokyo in March. The event symbolises the historical relationship between the two universities in the field of engineering which spans 150 years, beginning in 1873 when Henry Dyer, a graduate of the University of Glasgow, was dispatched to be the first president of the Imperial College of Engineering. The Imperial College of Engineering was the predecessor of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo and laid the foundation for Japan's technical education system.

The symposium featured lectures on this 150-year-long connection, as well as the historical and cultural ties between Scotland and Japan. In addition, research presentations were given by researchers from the University of Tokyo’s Department of Electrical Engineering and information, and the James Watt School of Engineering’s Department of Electronic and Nanoscale Engineering at the University of Glasgow. The hope is that through this symposium, all participants are able to gain new knowledge, and further collaboration between the two universities can be promoted in order to continue strengthening their ties.
