On Sunday 3rd August, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda attended the Scottish Sumo Open, hosted by Clan Sumo Scotland.

Before the matches, there were Japanese cultural events including a folk song performance, a bonsai exhibition by Ayrshire bonsai club, and a yukata try-on experience. Participants and spectators also performed a Bon Odori dance in a circle, with Consul General Takeda joining in.

On the day, men and women were separated into various weight classes and competed in exhilarating matches.

The Grand Sumo Tournament will be held in London on 15th – 19th October 2025, and this year in July, Nicholas George Tarasenko, who had been training with Clan Sumo Scotland, will continue his training with the Minato stable of the Japan Sumo Association. After completing his training and passing a Japanese language test, he will be officially admitted to the stable. These events show that interest in sumo is growing in the area.

Furthermore, the 2026 European Sumo Championships will be held in Scotland in June next year.

We hope that sumo will continue to help promote cultural exchange between the UK and Japan.
