On Friday 22nd August, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda met with author Asako Yuzuki, who was visiting Edinburgh at the invitation of the Edinburgh Book Festival. The following day, on Saturday 23rd, Deputy Consul General Minori Ishii attended a talk given by Asako Yuzuki, held at MacEwan Hall as part of the Edinburgh Book Festival.

Asako Yuzuki's novel "BUTTER" has become a best-seller in the UK, selling over 400,000 copies, and won the Debut Fiction category at the prestigious British Book Awards 2025.  This latest award means that the book has achieved a triple crown in the UK, winning the Books Are My Bag Breakthrough Author Award and being selected as the Waterstones Book of the Year 2024 also. This is a remarkable achievement amid the BUTTER craze sweeping the world and marks the first time a Japanese author has won a British Book Award.

Asako Yuzuki’s talk was a sold-out event with all in-person tickets being snapped up, and more than 60 people also joined the event online. There was also a long queue for the signing session with Asako Yuzuki which followed. The event was a great success and clearly reflected the popularity of "BUTTER" in the UK.
