On Sunday 7th September, Cultural Consul Masataka Abe attended Aberdeen Japan Day 2025, which was co-hosted by the Consulate and the executive committee of Aberdeen Japan Day. Aberdeen Japan Day was started in 2004, making this its 19th year. Additionally, the Aberdeen Kendo Thistle Cup was held by Aberdeen Kendo Club the day before.

On Aberdeen Japan Day 2025, there were various Japanese cultural experiences to enjoy, including ikebana, tea ceremony, calligraphy, origami, yukata, and Japanese toys such as Go, kendama and koma (spinning tops). There were also demonstrations of martial arts such as kendo (bamboo swordplay), kyudo (archery), iaido (swordplay), and unarmed combat namely aikido, judo, and karate. The Order of the Scottish Samurai committee were in attendance to present Samurai Awards to those who have contributed to Japan-Scotland relations as well. To conclude, everyone performed a Bon Odori dance in a circle.

Attendees were able to experience Japanese culture, and Aberdeen and Japan were able to take part in a friendly cultural exchange for a day.

We look forward to many people attending and having fun next year as well.
