On Tuesday 16th September, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda attended the event “Japan on Stage: An Introduction to Kabuki and Noh Theatre” hosted by the University of Edinburgh’s Dr Helen Parker and Kabuki musician Tanaka Denjiro VII.

On the day, the event begun with a lecture by Dr Helen Parker, who is a researcher of traditional Japanese drama such as Noh and Kabuki, and Kabuki musician Tanaka Denjiro VII explained Kabuki musical accompanists, introduced the kotsuzumi (small hand drum), and performed a demonstration. There was a very successful Q&A session with many questions asked about various topics, and attendees were able to experience trying to play the instruments as well. There were also exhibits of Edo period Noh masks, suszuribako (inkstone cases), inrou (pill box), sword guards, handicrafts and ukiyo-e arts. It was a valuable opportunity to see, hear and touch these items.

Tanaka School Kabuki musical accompanists are scheduled to perform in Edinburgh next August, so we hope that many people will learn about traditional music and performance, deepening the cultural exchange with Japan.
