Courtesy call on Cllr Sharron Potts, Deputy Mayor of Gateshead

On Friday, 26th September, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda visited the city of Gateshead in Northeast England and paid a courtesy call on Deputy Mayor, Cllr Sharron Potts.
The city of Gateshead has a relationship with Japan which reaches far back in history.
In 1987, the Japanese company Komatsu opened a factory in the city which eventually led to signing a twinning agreement with Komatsu City in 2001. Since then, Gateshead has engaged in exchanges with Komatsu City in various fields such as youth programs and cultural activities.
During their meeting, both parties engaged in a broad exchange of views regarding the long-standing friendship between the city of Gateshead and Komatsu City in Japan. This included the activities of the Gateshead-based Japanese company Komatsu, as well as the Japanese garden in Saltwell Park named 'Komatsu Friendship Garden'. Both parties also agreed to continue cooperating to promote their countries’ relationship in the future.
During a recent visit to Gateshead Town Hall, various materials and artefacts demonstrating the friendly relationship with Komatsu City were displayed throughout the building. The visit truly reflected the long-standing history of exchange between the two cities.
