Attendance at “BLOOM” a dance performance by Kae Sakurai
2025/10/18
On Saturday, 18th October, Deputy Consul General Minori Ishii attended the dance performance "BLOOM," at the invitation of the hosts. “BLOOM” is a collaborative production by percussive step dancer Kae Sakurai and Polish video artist Monika Smekot. Sakurai, who has lived in Scotland for 20 years, leads a local dance community "Kelvingrove Dancers" and is also engaged in promoting dance through workshops and events.
This event showcases the journey of a dancer who is inspired by the culture of their hometown which shares part of her name 'Sakura'. Ms Sakurai uses this inspiration to deepen traditional step dance in a new environment and to allow her unique expression to blossom. The innovative performance blends poetic video projections with an original music score, influenced by traditional music. The performance was then followed by a ceilidh, which Deputy Consul General Ishii attended, where participants were able to enjoy dancing together guided by the tunes of fiddle and other instruments played by Ms Sakurai and other musicians.
"BLOOM" has received support from Creative Scotland's 'Touring Fund for Theatre and Dance' and is scheduled to tour 12 locations in Scotland (including Edinburgh) until April 18th of next year.
