Viewing of joint taiko drumming performance SYNERGY by Tsuchigumo Daiko and UnitOne
2025/10/26
On Sunday 26th October, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda watched the joint taiko drumming performance “SYNERGY” by Tsuchigumo Daiko and UnitOne in Glasgow.
Since forming in 2016, husband and wife Martin Doyle and Shonagh Walker have promoted taiko from their base of operations in Scotland, as well as performed internationally. In 2019 and 2024, they held taiko workshops, performances and collaborative events with the Orkney Japan Association and the Consulate.
This time, Tsuchigumo Daiko and LA-based performance team UnitOne performed together twice in Los Angeles and once in Glasgow, and they will perform once in Exeter next month.
On the day, there was a wide range of ages in attendance, showing that Scotland is familiar with taiko drumming. The enjoyable performance blended traditional powerful sounds and deep vibrations with contemporary expressions such as various instruments and choreographed dance.
These performances formed a cultural bridge between Japan and Scotland, and we look forward to their continued success at promoting cultural exchange through taiko drumming.
