On Tuesday 4th November, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda visited Dundee and paid a courtesy call on Bill Campbell, Lord Provost of Dundee.

Dundee, which had a prosperous jute industry in the 19th century, and is now Scotland’s 4th most populated city. As traditional industry declined in the 1980s, they gave way to the development of biomedical science and technology industries, which now accounts for 10% of the UK’s digital entertainment industry. In 2014, Dundee was recognised as the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design and the city has been transformed in recent years, particularly at the Waterfront.

On the day, Consul General Takeda and Lord Provost Campbell exchanged views on a wide variety of topics related to the connection between Japan and the Dundee. Specifically, V&A Dundee’s promotion of Japanese culture, Dundee University and Abertay University’s research and developments, and the city’s harbour redevelopment were discussed, and future cooperation agreed upon.

After that, Consul General Takeda was guided to facilities such as Robert Scott’s “RSS Discovery” which was built in the city and used in the UK’s first Antarctic expedition and Dundee Contemporary Arts.
