Consul General Takeda’s courtesy call on the Principal of the University of Glasgow
2025/12/12
On Friday 12th December, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda paid a courtesy call on Professor Andy Schofield, the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow.
The University of Glasgow is Scotland’s second oldest university, having been established in 1451. Henry Dyer, a graduate of the University of Glasgow, was dispatched to be the first president of the University of Tokyo’s Imperial College of Engineering in 1873. The Imperial College of Engineering was the predecessor of the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Engineering and laid the foundation for Japan's technical education system. The University of Glasgow has a strong connection to Japan due to many Japanese students attending the university during the Meiji and Taisho periods, including Masataka Taketsuru who is considered “the father of Japanese whisky”.
On the day, they exchanged views on the university’s connection with Japan and agreed to continue to work closely together.
Afterwards, Consul General Takeda was guided around the campus by Professor Muhammad Imran, Head of James Watt School of Engineering, where he visited both new and historical buildings that coexist together.
