Holding of Japanese Film Festival 2026 at the Newcastle University

On Wednesday 4th February, the annual Japanese Film Festival was held at Newcastle University, co-hosted by the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh, the university and the Japan Foundation. This was the first time the Film Festival was held at Newcastle University.
A welcome address was delivered by Dr Sandra Salin, Deputy head of the School of Modern languages, expressing gratitude to those involved in making it possible to hold the event at the university for the first time, and sharing her hopes for new cultural exchanges through Japanese films.
Prior to the screening of the documentary film " SUMODO-The Successors of Samurai-(2020)", Dr Shiro Yoshioka, Lecturer in Japanese Studies at Newcastle University gave a lecture on cultural background, traditions, etiquette, and the contemporary sumo world. Despite being the first event of its kind, thanks to the support of the university a very large number of people attended, and the screening was a great success.
