On Monday 9th February, Cultural Consul Masataka Abe attended a networking event for Training Young Japanese Artists and Creators who are co-producing the new opera “The Great Wave” at Theatre Royal.

The new, international opera “The Great Wave” provides a great opportunity for young Japanese artists and creators to gain knowledge and experience as they look to expand their career overseas. With support from The Japan Creator Support Fund, the following artists have been sent to gain experience as part of the production:

Opera Production:
- Yukari Saito (Conductor)
- Keiko Sumida (Assistant Director)
- Yuka Hisamatsu (Lighting Designer)
- Sho YamaguchiI (Video Designer)
- Kanon Adachi (Soprano)
- Naho Koizumi (Soprano)
- Ken Sugiyama (Actor)

Composition/Conducting:
- Kento Ishikawa (Composer/Conductor)
- Yuki Urabe (Composer/Conductor)
- Hiroki Tanaka (Composer)
- Ayane Nakase (Composer)

Video Production:
- Ayami Sakamoto (Videographer)

During the event, the artists were introduced and there was an exchange of opinions on the differences and similarities between production sets in Scotland and Japan that they had noticed during their stay. The Lucerne Festival was also introduced, which was attended by the artists specialising in composition. They talked about their expectations for the opportunity as part of The Great Wave’s production and the experience they have gained from it so far. The event was attended by members of the Scottish Opera, people in the theatre and music industry, and students studying subjects related to areas such as theatre and arts, who are of the same generation as the visiting artists who have joined The Great Wave with support from The Japan Creator Support Fund. It is hoped that this co-produced opera will lead to new cultural exchange.
