Visit to the Oriental Museum of Durham university
2026/2/25
On Wednesday 25th February, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda visited the Oriental Museum of Durham university.
Under the guidance of Dr Craig Barclay, Head of Museums, Galleries and Exhibitions, the Consul General toured the exhibits, focusing mainly on those related to Japan. In particular, the ongoing exhibition 'Echoes of Friendship: the Squire Family in Meiji Era Japan' is based on a collaboration agreement with the National Museum of Japanese History located in Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture. Through photographs and other materials, the exhibition conveys the daily life of a British family who immigrated from this area to Japan during the Meiji era.
It is expected that through this museum, there will be a renewed awareness of the historical connections between Northeast England and Japan, as well as a deepening of cultural and academic exchanges.
