On Friday 27th March, Deputy Consul General Minori Ishii joined Mr Isao Takahashi, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in the United Kingdom and Dr. Toshiyasu Ichioka, Director, RIKEN Europe Office for a site visit of EPCC at the University of Edinburgh during their official trip.

EPCC (formerly the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre) at the University of Edinburgh is one of Europe’s premier hubs for computational science. It operates the UK’s primary national supercomputing service, ARCHER2, alongside cutting-edge AI-specific systems. As a leading UK institution for data science and supercomputing research and operations, EPCC provides high-end HPC infrastructure, delivers Master’s level education, supports sustainable research software development, and offers comprehensive consultancy to industry. Furthermore, as the host site for the next-generation Exascale system—backed by a £750 million investment from the UK government - it is driving the acceleration of innovation through world-class computational power.

During their visit, the delegation received an overview from Professor Mark Parsons, EPCC Director at their main office in Edinburgh. They were then guided by X on a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities at the Advanced Computing Facility (ACF), where they inspected world-class supercomputing systems, including ARCHER2 and the next-generation Exascale machine.
