Attendance at the 2026 Edinburgh Science Festival Programme Opening Gala Event

On Thursday 2nd April, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda attended the opening gala event of the 2026 Edinburgh Science Festival.

The Edinburgh Science Festival began in 1989 as the world's first festival dedicated to science and technology. It is held every year during the Easter holidays. This year, under the theme 'Going Global', a variety of programmes including science and technology shows, hands-on activities, and engaging talks for audiences of all ages will be held from Saturday, 4th April to Sunday, 19th April.

During the event, Mr Hassun El-Zafar, Director & CEO of the Edinburgh Science Festival shared the thoughts behind this year’s theme. Then, ”First Women of Science” was held as an opening gala event.

Hosted by former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in conversation with a panel including Astronomer Royal for Scotland Prof Catherine Heymans, Personal Chair in Meta-Science and Translational Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Prof Emily Sena, and author of “The Edinburgh Seven”,  Ms Janey Jones.
