On Wednesday 13th May, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda visited the Northern Lighthouse Board Headquarters in Edinburgh and paid a courtesy call on Mike Bullock, CEO of the Northern Lighthouse Board.

The Northern Lighthouse Board is the General Lighthouse Authoritiy, established in 1786, responsible for the provision and maintenance of aids to navigation such as lighthouses, buoys, and beacons in the waters of Scotland and the Isle of Man.

During his visit, after an overview briefing by Mr. Bullock, Consul General Takeda visited the facilities within the headquarters and viewed valuable historical and technical materials related to lighthouses on display.

The facility is also the location where Richard Henry Brunton, known as the "Father of Japanese Lighthouses," is said to have trained before being dispatched to Japan. Diverse exchanges and collaborations with Japan have continued to this day. These include practical support for the construction of modern lighthouses, the development of standards in 1860-70s (early Meiji) Japan, the world's first "twinned lighthouse" partnership between Inubosaki Lighthouse and Mull of Galloway Lighthouse in 2024, and academic exchanges concerning "Maritime and lighthouse studies."

During the meeting, both parties exchanged views on the connection with Japan and agreed to continue to work closely together.
