On Wednesday 17th June, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda attended the Sakura cherry tree ceremony at the University of Stirling. As part of the UK-Japan Sakura Cherry Tree Project, 30 new Sakura cherry tree saplings were planted.

The UK-Japan Sakura Cherry Tree Project has planted over 8,000 Sakura cherry trees in over 1,000 locations so far, with many trees planted in the Consulate’s jurisdiction ranging from Orkney in the far north of Scotland, to mainland Scotland and North East  England.

On the day, Consul General Takeda met with Prof Neville Wylie, Senior Deputy Principal (Internationalism) and Nagasaki University delegates (Prof Masanari Kimura, Prof Ryo Kawabe, and Prof Ikuo Yamamoto) who signed a Memorandum of Understanding last year. A plaque commemorating the trees was unveiled as well.

We hope that this Sakura cherry tree planting will further deepen the ties between Japan and Scotland, and that the development of academic research exchanges between the University of Stirling and Nagasaki University will grow and blossom, just like the Sakura cherry tree saplings.
