40th JET Programme Pre-departure Orientation and Reception (2026)

On Thursday 9th July, the pre-departure orientation and reception was held for the 2026 JET Programme participants, the 40th year of the Programme in the UK. This year, 39 participants will depart from the Consulate’s jurisdiction in August to work as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) in schools across Japan.
To start the pre-departure orientation, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda gave a welcome speech, noting that since its launch in 1987, the JET Programme has played a major role in promoting friendship between Japan and the UK. He encouraged the participants to build new connections across Japan, deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and life, and become active bridges between the two countries in the future.

During the orientation the participants took part in information sessions including a presentation from a former JET, departure and travel arrangements, methods for teaching English as a foreign language, survival Japanese.
Following the end of the orientation sessions a send-off reception was held. The reception was attended by representatives from the Japan Society of Scotland, former JET participants and members of JETAA groups. A toast was given by Mr Shinichiro Matsui, Deputy Director of the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations London office, which co-hosted the event alongside the Consulate.

JET is an acronym for The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme. The JET Programme was launched in 1987 with the aim of promoting internationalisation at local levels by inviting young people from overseas to Japan and engaging in foreign language education and international exchange.
