Kabuki music event at St Mary’s Church

On Tuesday, 11 August, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda attended a performance by kabuki musicians held at St Mary’s Church in Edinburgh, giving a great opportunity for Japan-Scotland cross-cultural exchange.
The performance was presented by a group of artists participating in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with support from the Japan Foundation, the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, and the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation. The ensemble was led by Tanaka Denjiro VII, the seventh-generation head of the Tanaka school of kabuki musicians; he was accompanied by Etsuyo Tosha (Hayashi actor), Mitsujiro Kineya (nagauta), Katsushiro Kineya (shamisen), Shuraku Tosha (flute) and Masaru Tsuji (wadaiko drums).
Traditional Japanese Kabuki music resonated through the solemn atmosphere of the church. A large audience spanning a wide range of ages attended the event, demonstrating the high level of interest in traditional Japanese culture in Scotland.
