Fringe Japan 2026 – Rakugo Event

On Wednesday, 12th August, the second week of Fringe Japan 2026 kicked off with a rakugo performance (traditional Japanese comic storytelling) featuring storyteller Katsura Monshirō, co-hosted by the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh.
The event not only included an introduction to rakugo and a performance in English but also offered the audience a hands-on opportunity to experience the art form's distinctive gestures—such as using simple props like a folding fan while seated to evoke scenes and imagery.
The performance filled the venue with laughter. During the Q&A session, the audience showed great interest, asking numerous questions including on the differences between performing in Japanese and in English.
