Attendance at the Event of “For the Safety of All: Scotland’s Lighthouses” Exhibition

On Thursday 13th August, Cultural Consul Masataka Abe attended a lecture titled "More than Lighthouses" at HM General Register House. The event was held as part of the exhibition "For the Safety of All: Scotland’s Lighthouses," which showcases historical materials related to lighthouses in commemoration of the 240th anniversary of the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB).
During the event, Mike Bullock, CEO of the NLB, delivered a lecture covering the history of lighthouses—which have supported navigational safety amidst harsh natural environments—as well as the NLB’s efforts in lighthouse construction and maintenance, and its collaboration with local communities and various organisations.
The exhibition presents the 240-year history of the NLB and Scotland's lighthouses through valuable archival materials, including maps, letters and memoranda. Exhibits include an outline of the construction process of Bell Rock Lighthouse – the world's oldest offshore lighthouse – and letters from a lighthouse keeper who went missing.
Engineers from Scotland who traveled to Japan during the Meiji era laid the foundations for Japan's lighthouse system. Given this connection, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to view a wealth of valuable historical records from Scotland.
